School Information
Free and Reduced Lunch
Ninety percent (90%) of our students qualified for free or reduced lunch during the 2007-2008 school year . Explanation of the Evaluation Process
Houston Heights Learning Academy teachers use a variety of assessment tools. Different age groups and subject areas require some adaptations of these techniques. The process that teachers use to evaluate developmental growth are through observation, participation, adhering to rubrics, quizzes, tests, presentations, projects, role-playing, cooperative group work, and portfolios. The teachers monitor a student's progress with journals, anecdotal notes, observations, progress reports, portfolios, role-playing, and quizzes. Data from formal and informal assessments are analyzed to determine specific student learning and instructional needs. In addition, students take monthly benchmark tests in the areas of reading and math. The assessments are analyzed and instructional modifications are made. A process of teach, test, review and adjust, re-teach, and re-test is utilized. We have (6) six-week reporting periods during which we will use the following tools:
Each student's progress will be monitored through progress reports, report cards, and regular checks of the portfolio. School Arrival
Classes begin at 7:45 a.m. each morning. Please ensure that your child arrives to school on time everyday. All students are to be dropped off at the West 8 th entrance and taken to the school cafeteria. School faculty will be available in this area from 7:15 a.m. until 7:40 a.m. supervising breakfast and student arrival. Your child must be in the cafeteria no later than 7:40 a.m. in order to join their homeroom class. School Tardies
Classes begin at 7:45 a.m. each morning. If you child arrives after 7:45 a.m. they are considered tardy and must check-in with the school office for a tardy slip. Failure to check-in with the office could result in your child being counted absent. Please refer to the Houston Heights Learning Academy Attendance policy for more information on this topic. Class Schedules
Students in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and 1 st through 2 nd Levels are self contained. Students in Levels 3 & 4 will change classes daily. All students will participate in an Art class one week and Physical Education another. The First Semester schedule is enclosed for your reference. Should you have any questions regarding class schedules, please contact your child's teacher. Visitors
All individuals who are not employed by H.H.L.A. are considered visitors and must sign in through the school office upon arrival. This includes parents. Should a parent need to drop off any item that needs to be given to their child, such as, lunch, homework, a jacket, etc. they may leave it with the office staff and they will deliver the item(s) to the student. This will keep class interruption to a minimum. Non-custodial parents may not obtain student information nor visit their child at school. This includes any other unannounced extended family members who want to visit with a child or gain information about the student's progress. |
